Planning for Your Class of 1970 Reunion: Make it a Group Effort

Often in planning reunions, one person takes the lead. That person can definitely be you. But planning your class of 1970 reunion can be a big affair, and you really don’t want to take it all on yourself. The ‘70s may have been the “Me Decade,” but you can make this the “We Decade” and get all your friends from way back in the day to help make the reunion a success.

Planning for Your Class of 1970 Reunion: The Music

1970 brought some unbelievable music into the world. The Beatles produced their final album, Let It Be, a fitting tribute to the passing of one of the great rock bands of all time. Simon and Garfunkel came out with Bridge Over Troubled Water, what some consider to have been their best effort. If you’re going to have a class of 1970 reunion, you’ve got to include some of that classic rock ‘n’ roll music from the era. It just wouldn’t be the same without it.

Planning for Your Class of 1970 Reunion: 1970s Theme

You have a number of choices when it comes to a 1970s theme, but you’ll almost definitely want to go for the costume route. 1970s fashions were outta sight, from bellbottoms and earth shoes to mohair vests and round sunglasses. The 1970s look was unmistakable, and it can be a lot of fun to have a reunion based around those fashions. Some 1970s events that could form the basis of a theme for your class of 1970 reunion include: The First Earth Day, the Apollo 13 mission, Anti-Vietnam demonstrations and the first appearance of the iconic comic strip Doonesbury.

Planning for Your Class of 1970 Reunion: Recording the Event

In 1970, your event would have had to be captured by film products from Kodak or Polaroid, or maybe a somewhat unwieldy video camera. Now we live in the digital age, and you can capture every moment with a digital camera or digital video device, and just discard what you don’t like. Have a few of these devices on hand, and encourage your guests to bring their own, and email you the results so you can create a webpage or DVD to share with the whole class.

Planning for Your Class of 1970 Reunion: Get Ready for the Next One

If your class of 1970 reunion is a success, you’ll probably want to think about trying another one five or ten years down the line. Be sure to get everyone who participates in your reunion to record their names, ideally with contact information, so you can let them know when the next event is happening.
