Sports Scores of 1970
Great Sports Scores of 1970: Kansas City Chiefs 23, Minnesota Vikings 7
It seemed that after the Jets victory the previous year, the dam had burst. No one was taking the AFC for granted any longer, and a strong Vikings team knew they would have all they could handle when they faced the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl IV. Some notable features of this game included quarterback Len Dawson’s MVP performance for the Chiefs and the amusing antics of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Hank Stram, who was miked for sound, and whose comments in part have been captured forever on NFL films.
Great Sports Scores of 1970: Boston Bruins 4, St. Louis Blues 0
Yet again, for the St. Louis Blues, one of the great sports scores of 1970 was one of the worst. The Blues continued their successful effort to become the Buffalo Bills of hockey (The Bills lost four straight Super Bowls, from 1990 to 1993), by allowing themselves to be swept in the third consecutive Stanley Cup Final. This time the recipient of the Blues championship ineptitude was the Boston Bruins, rather than the Montreal Canadiens, but the Bruins beat them even more soundly, scoring a total of 20 goals to the Blues 7. No doubt completely broken by their failures in the championship, the St. Louis Blues have not appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals since, a drought of over 40 years.
Great Sports Scores of 1970: Baltimore Orioles 4, Cincinnati Reds 1
After their ignominious defeat in 1969, the Orioles found some better sports scores of 1970 to enjoy. Their play earned them, like the St. Louis Blues, an opportunity to redeem themselves, but unlike the Blues, the Orioles would not waste the opportunity. Although Cincinnati jumped to a 3 run lead in the first game, it was all downhill after that, as Baltimore was able to rally and win that game and the next one in the Reds’ home park. A three run blast in the eighth inning of Game 4 by Lee May prevented an embarrassing sweep by the Orioles, but the Reds couldn’t muster much more than that, and the Orioles took the series in five.
Great Sports Scores of 1970: New York Knicks 4, Los Angeles Lakers 3
The Knicks missed the underdog New York sports onslaught of 1969 by just one year. In 1970, it was the New York Knicks turn to shine. This Knicks team was probably the most unforgettable in Knick history, featuring stars like Bill Bradley, Willis Reed, Dave DeBusschere and Walt “Clyde” Frazier. Of course, they still had the Lakers’ perennial all-stars, Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain to deal with. But deal with them they did, and in 1970 the Knicks collected their first NBA title.
